A Narrative Inquiry on the Experiences of skilled Male Nurses

Abstract
|

|
Purpose: To explore the meaning of experiences of the skilled male nurses with over ten years of clinical experience.
Methods: Narrative methodology was employed to examine the meaning of the participants' narratives through in-depth interviews with four male nurses between April and June 2019.
Results: The analysis produced five categories, “Pilot versus Nurse”, “Male Reserve, Rejoining Female Army”, “Man versus Man”, “Father, the Fourth Gender”, and “Career, a New Journey into Uncharted Land”.
Conclusion: In terms of personal justification, skilled male nurses felt a heavy responsibility as the head of a household and were pursuing stability as professionals. In terms of practical justification, it was necessary to systematically help them design their careers so that their nursing professionalism as skilled male nurses could improve. In terms of social justification, it was necessary to help the concept of gender equality be realized in the working environment and the culture of medical organizations.
